I know you've come to this conclusion already... but I think the purple background etc. is taking too much from your work. I suggest, in terms of project documentation, you seek to 'go white' and think more confidently about negative space (i.e. spreading the work out through more pages, so a single strong image is allowed to have a page to itself, for example) and letting the quality of your work breathe a bit more.
